Car Finance UK Explained: PCP vs HP vs PCH — Which Is Right for You?

Understand PCP, HP, and PCH car finance options available at UK dealers. Compare interest rates, balloon payments, mileage limits, and find the best finance deal for your budget.

Walk into any UK car dealership and the salesperson will almost certainly steer the conversation toward monthly payments rather than the sticker price. According to the Finance & Leasing Association, over 90% of new private car registrations in the UK were funded through some form of dealer finance in 2024. Car finance is now the default way Britain buys cars.

But the acronyms can be dizzying: PCP, HP, PCH. Each works differently, suits different buyers, and carries its own risks and rewards.

What Is PCP (Personal Contract Purchase)?

PCP is the most popular form of car finance in the UK. You pay a deposit (typically 10%), make fixed monthly payments over 24-48 months, and face a balloon payment at the end — the Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV). You then choose: pay the balloon and own the car, hand the keys back, or use any equity as deposit on a new deal.

PCP offers lower monthly costs because you’re only financing depreciation. However, strict mileage limits apply (usually 8,000-12,000 miles/year) and the car must be maintained to a reasonable standard.

What Is HP (Hire Purchase)?

HP is the straightforward option: pay a deposit, make fixed monthly payments, and once the final payment clears, the car is yours. No balloon payment, no mileage restrictions. Because you’re financing the entire purchase price, monthly payments are higher than PCP.

HP works well for buyers who intend to keep their car long-term, drive above-average mileage, or want to avoid balloon payment complexity. Under HP, the finance company retains title until the final payment is made.

What Is PCH (Personal Contract Hire)?

PCH — often called leasing — is fundamentally different. You’re renting the car, not buying it. There is no option to own. Monthly payments are typically the lowest of the three, and many contracts include maintenance. Mileage limits apply strictly.

PCH works best for drivers who change cars every 2-3 years, stay within predictable mileage, and want fixed-cost motoring without ownership responsibilities.

Which Finance Option Is Right for You?

Choose PCP if you want lower monthly payments and plan to change your car every 2-4 years. Choose HP if you want outright ownership and drive high annual mileage. Choose PCH if you want the lowest fixed monthly cost and don’t mind never owning the car.

Five Key Questions to Ask Any Dealer

  1. What is the total amount payable over the full term?
  2. What is the APR and is it representative?
  3. What are the exact mileage limits and excess charges?
  4. Are there any upfront fees beyond the deposit?
  5. What happens if I want to settle early?

A reputable dealer — whether an approved used retailer or an independent — should answer these questions transparently. Our guide on how to negotiate with UK car dealers covers tactics that can save you hundreds on finance deals.

Common Pitfalls

Don’t focus only on the monthly payment — always anchor on total cost. Don’t ignore the APR — a difference of 3% on a £20,000 loan over four years adds £1,200 in extra interest. Be honest about your annual mileage. And shop around — finance offers vary between dealerships, even for the same car. Browse car dealers in Manchester and our nationwide directory to compare offers.

The smartest move is to run the numbers on all three options before walking into a showroom. Know your annual mileage. Check your credit score. Get a quote from your bank. And never sign until you’ve compared the total cost — not just the monthly payment — across multiple UK car dealers.
